1. Our Commitment
At New Wave Academy of Martial Arts, the safety and well-being of our students are our highest priority. We are fully committed to providing a secure, positive, and respectful environment where everyone — especially children, young people, and vulnerable adults — can learn and train safely.
We believe that everyone has the right to be protected from harm, abuse, and neglect, and that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
2. Purpose of This Policy
This policy outlines how New Wave Academy safeguards children, young people, and vulnerable adults. It applies to all instructors, assistant coaches, volunteers, parents, and visitors to the academy.
The purpose is to:
Protect our students from harm, abuse, and neglect.
Provide guidance to staff and volunteers on recognising and responding to safeguarding concerns.
Ensure that safeguarding concerns are handled promptly, sensitively, and appropriately.
3. Who Is Covered by This Policy
This policy applies to:
All children and young people under the age of 18.
Vulnerable adults participating in our classes.
All instructors, staff, and volunteers.
Parents, guardians, and visitors involved in academy activities.
4. Our Safeguarding Principles
We adhere to the following principles:
Protection: We will protect all students from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Prevention: We will create a safe environment and reduce opportunities for harm to occur.
Empowerment: We will listen to and respect all students’ voices and concerns.
Partnership: We will work with parents, carers, and relevant authorities when safeguarding concerns arise.
Accountability: Everyone in our academy is responsible for safeguarding.
5. Recognising Abuse
Abuse can take many forms, including:
Physical abuse – causing physical harm.
Emotional abuse – persistent emotional ill-treatment.
Sexual abuse – involvement in sexual activity without consent or understanding.
Neglect – failure to meet a person’s basic needs.
Bullying and harassment – including online or social media abuse.
All staff and volunteers are trained to recognise the signs of abuse and to act appropriately.
6. Responding to Concerns
If anyone has a safeguarding concern about a child, young person, or vulnerable adult, they must:
Report it immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
Record details of the concern factually and accurately.
Refrain from investigating or confronting any parties directly.
The DSL will assess the concern and, if necessary, contact the relevant local safeguarding authorities.

8. Safe Recruitment and Training
All instructors, staff, and volunteers undergo enhanced DBS checks before working with children or vulnerable adults.
Safeguarding training is provided regularly to ensure ongoing awareness and compliance.
We maintain a code of conduct for all staff, covering appropriate boundaries, language, and behaviour.
9. Photography and Social Media
Photographs or videos of students will only be taken with prior written consent from a parent or guardian.
Images will be used responsibly and never shared without permission.
Students are advised not to share personal information online related to the academy.
10. Bullying and Behaviour
Bullying of any kind — physical, verbal, or online — is not tolerated.
All students are expected to treat others with respect and follow our academy’s code of conduct.
Reports of bullying will be taken seriously and addressed promptly.
11. Confidentiality and Record Keeping
All safeguarding records are kept securely and shared only with those who need to know.
We comply with UK Data Protection Laws (GDPR) when storing and processing information related to safeguarding.
12. Review of Policy
This safeguarding policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are changes in legislation or guidance.
We welcome feedback from staff, parents, and students to help keep our safeguarding standards high.
