Course Guidelines & Information

Frequently asked questions

  • The Access Course runs from two locations in Nunhead:

The Green , Nunhead, Community Centre

    London

    SE15 3QQ

    • Mondays & Wednesdays

    • 5:30-6:15 pm

    Buchan Hall

    London

    SE15 3HQ

    • Tuesdays and Thursdays

    • 5:30-6:30pm

Please note: The Tigers programme (ages 4–8) is only available at The Green Community Centre.

  • The Access to Taekwondo course is designed to give children and adults the opportunity to experience Taekwondo (TKD) training and decide whether it is right for them before committing to uniforms and other costs. As an introductory course, it covers the basics of TKD, including stances, hand and leg techniques, as well as stretching and fitness exercises. There is no commitment to long-term training when signing up. If, at the end of the course, you decide TKD is not for you, that is absolutely fine.

  • The Access Course is a rolling programme that runs every month. To get the most from the course, we recommend registering and paying by the 25th of the month prior to your desired start date (for example, register and pay by 25th January for a February start).

You are still welcome to join later in the month; however, we will always aim to provide 4–8 sessions or, where appropriate, suggest a start date for the following month.

    ABSENCE

If a student is unable to attend any session for any reason, they must contact New Wave by phone or email to notify us of their absence. Please note that fees are non-refundable for missed sessions.

  • Students on the course MUST adhere to the New Wave Code of Conduct.

    1. I will respect myself, fellow students and Instructors.

    2. I will do my best to listen and learn from my Instructor, Assistant Instructors and fellow students.

    3. I will give 100% effort in my lessons.

    4. I will practice Taekwondo in my own time, as long as it is safe for me to do so, without risk of injury to myself and those around me.

    5. I understand that Taekwondo is for self-defence and will not use it to take advantage of others.

  • Medical conditions must be declared on the membership form.

Applicants who suffer from any medical condition must obtain a letter from their GP confirming that they are fit to practise Taekwondo (TKD). This letter must be provided to New Wave before the applicant can commence training.

  • WHAT TO WEAR ON THE COURSE:

Please note that Taekwondo is practised barefoot.

Students should wear jogging bottoms or leggings with a T-shirt or sweatshirt for the duration of the course.

Please do not purchase a Taekwondo uniform, as only official New Wave TKD uniforms may be worn at New Wave clubs and centres.

Also, jewellery, watches, and other loose items should be removed before each class.

    EATING BEFORE TAEKWONDO:

If having a proper meal, it is recommended that children eat 2–3 hours before Taekwondo training to allow sufficient time for digestion. Meals should include plenty of carbohydrates and some protein, while being low in fat, as fat takes longer to digest and may cause discomfort during exercise. Suitable carbohydrates include pasta, bread, fruit, and vegetables.

If having a snack before training, it should be eaten 40–60 minutes beforehand to provide energy for the session.

    Examples of suitable snacks include:

    • Non-fat Greek yogurt with fruit

    • Whole grain toast with a hard-boiled egg

    • Banana with 1 tbsp peanut butter

    • Yogurt-based smoothies

    • A small handful of nuts and raisins (2 parts raisins to 1 part nuts)

    TOILET BREAKS:

To avoid disruptions during class, please ensure that younger children use the toilet before the start of the session.

    WAITING ARRANGEMENTS

For the first few sessions of the Access Course, it is important that parents of younger students remain close by.

    THE GREEN:

Parents have two options for waiting during their child’s class:

    1. Parents may wait in the foyer, where seating is available.

    2. Parents may wait in the back garden at The Green, which also has seating.

    BUCHAN HALL:

Accompanying parents have two options for waiting during their child’s class:

    1. Parents may wait in the foyer, where seating is provided.

    2. If driving, parents may wait in their car.

  • Students must attend all sessions to receive an end-of-course certificate and to qualify for one year of free membership with New Wave TKD, along with additional discounts on memberships, uniforms, and badges. These benefits are only available to students who successfully complete the Access Course and transfer directly into regular classes without any break in attendance.
