Getting ready for your first class!

Please read the information carefully to help you prepare for your first class!

  • Please note that Taekwondo is practised barefoot.

Students should wear jogging bottoms or leggings with a T-shirt or sweatshirt for the duration of the course.

Please do not purchase a Taekwondo uniform, as only official New Wave TKD uniforms may be worn at New Wave clubs and centres.

Also, jewellery, watches, and other loose items should be removed before each class.

  • If having a proper meal, it is recommended that children eat 2–3 hours before Taekwondo training to allow sufficient time for digestion. Meals should include plenty of carbohydrates and some protein, while being low in fat, as fat takes longer to digest and may cause discomfort during exercise. Suitable carbohydrates include pasta, bread, fruit, and vegetables.

If having a snack before training, it should be eaten 40–60 minutes beforehand to provide energy for the session.

    Examples of suitable snacks include:

    • Non-fat Greek yogurt with fruit

    • Whole grain toast with a hard-boiled egg

    • Banana with 1 tbsp peanut butter

    • Yogurt-based smoothies

    • A small handful of nuts and raisins (2 parts raisins to 1 part nuts)

  • To avoid disruptions during class, please ensure that younger children use the toilet before the start of the session.

  • For the first few sessions of the Access Course, it is important that parents of younger students remain close by.
